PEST SAFETY & MYTHS

Do Earwigs Bite? (And Do They Really Go in Your Ear?)

Do earwigs bite, do they crawl in your ear, and are they dangerous? Straight answers — and the myth busted.

By Paul Outfleet, Owner & Licensed Pest Professional (CA SPCB #8539) · Updated June 2026

Earwigs don't truly bite, and they do not crawl into people's ears to lay eggs in your brain — that's a myth. They can pinch with the forceps on their rear if handled, but it rarely breaks skin, isn't venomous, and causes no lasting harm. Earwigs carry no disease and pose no real danger to people or pets.

Do earwigs bite or pinch?

Earwigs don't bite with their mouthparts the way an ant or spider might. What they can do is pinch with the forceps (the curved 'pincers') at the end of the abdomen, usually only if you pick one up or trap it against your skin. Even then, most pinches don't break the skin. There's no venom and no stinger involved.

Does an earwig pinch hurt?

Barely. A large male earwig can deliver a pinch you'll feel — a quick, sharp nip — but it's on par with a light pinch from your own fingernails and almost never draws blood. If it does break skin, wash the spot with soap and water; that's the extent of the first aid needed. There's nothing toxic to worry about.

The 'earwig in your ear' myth — where it came from and why it's false

The name 'earwig' goes back centuries to a belief that the insects crawl into sleeping people's ears and burrow into the brain to lay eggs. It's vivid — and completely false. Earwigs aren't attracted to ears, they don't tunnel into people, and the human ear canal is a dead end with bone behind it. Like any small insect, an earwig could wander into an ear by sheer accident (so can ants or moths), but there's nothing drawing them there and no nesting, biting, or brain involved.

Are earwigs dangerous or poisonous?

No. Earwigs are not poisonous or venomous, they don't transmit disease to humans, and they don't infest or feed on people. They're a nuisance pest and, in the garden, a plant pest — but they're not a health threat. You don't need to panic if you find one in the bathroom; you just don't want a lot of them.

Are earwigs harmful to pets?

Not really. A curious dog or cat that eats an earwig might get a brief, mild stomach upset at most, and a pinch to a sniffing nose is harmless. Earwigs aren't toxic to pets. The bigger issue is simply that lots of earwigs indoors is unpleasant for everyone.

Why earwigs feel scary but aren't

Those rear pincers, the fast nighttime scurrying, and the creepy name all make earwigs look more menacing than they are. Once you know the pinch is trivial and the ear story is fiction, finding one stops being alarming. The legitimate reason to act is numbers — an indoor invasion or garden damage — not danger.

When an infestation is the real problem

One earwig is nothing. A steady stream of them indoors, or a garden getting shredded overnight, means the outdoor population has built up and is pushing in. That's worth treating — the harborage and perimeter outside, plus sealing entry points. Total Pest Control handles earwigs across Fresno and the Central Valley.
