NIGHTTIME STINGERS

Scorpion Control in Fresno, CA

Finding scorpions in the garage, the block wall, or worse, the house? Central Valley scorpions hunt at night and shelter in gaps, woodpiles, and rocks. Here is how a licensed Fresno exterminator drives them back out and keeps them out.

Few pests rattle people like a scorpion turning up in the garage or skittering across the patio at night. The good news for Fresno homeowners: the scorpions common to the Central Valley are far less dangerous than the desert species people fear. The better news: they are very controllable once you treat the perimeter and take away the gaps, clutter, and insect meals that draw them in.

The fast answer

Most scorpions found around Fresno deliver a sting that is painful but, for a healthy adult, not medically dangerous - closer to a bad bee sting. (The genuinely dangerous Arizona bark scorpion is a desert species and is not established here.) They hunt at night and hide by day in block walls, woodpiles, rocks, and clutter, slipping inside through foundation and door gaps. Control means a perimeter treatment, removing those harborage spots, and knocking down the insects they eat.

Scorpions are nocturnal hunters. By day they shelter in wall gaps, block walls, garages, and woodpiles - then slip inside through small openings.

Why you have scorpions (it is usually about food and shelter)

Scorpions are predators - they eat crickets, roaches, spiders, and other insects. A scorpion problem is very often a sign of an insect problem, so the lasting fix has to address both. They also love harborage: block walls, woodpiles, rock features, dense ground cover, stacked clutter in the garage, and the cool gap under a door threshold. Fresno yards offer plenty of all of it.

Block walls & retaining wallsCool, hollow, full of cracksTreat and seal; reduce contact clutter
Woodpiles & stacked itemsDark, undisturbed, full of preyMove off the ground and away from the house

Garages & shedsClutter and insect preyDeclutter; treat; seal the door gap
Door thresholds & foundation gapsEasy entry at nightSeal gaps; add door sweeps
Simple habits that prevent stings

Do not reach bare-handed into woodpiles, boxes, or dark corners of the garage. Shake out shoes, gloves, and folded clothing left in the garage before putting them on. Keep beds away from walls and floor-length bedding tucked up. Stings are painful and can be serious for young children, older adults, or anyone with allergies - if a reaction seems severe, seek medical care.

Scorpion control FAQ

Are the scorpions in Fresno dangerous?

For most healthy adults, the scorpions common to the Central Valley deliver a sting comparable to a bee - painful, but not life-threatening. The dangerous Arizona bark scorpion is a desert species not established in our area. That said, a sting can be serious for young children, older adults, or anyone with an allergy, so reactions that seem severe warrant medical attention.

Why do I suddenly have scorpions?

Usually because there is food and shelter for them. Scorpions eat other insects, so a scorpion problem often points to an underlying insect problem, plus harborage like block walls, woodpiles, rocks, and clutter. Hot, dry stretches also push them toward the moisture and prey around homes.

How do you keep scorpions out of the house?

A perimeter treatment plus exclusion. We treat the foundation, walls, and entry points, knock down the insects scorpions feed on, and point out the harborage and gaps to fix - sealing door thresholds, adding sweeps, and moving woodpiles and clutter away from the structure.

Do scorpions really glow under UV light?

Yes - scorpions fluoresce bright green under ultraviolet light, which makes a nighttime blacklight inspection a useful way to find them and pinpoint harborage and entry points around the home.

Can you actually get rid of them?

We can greatly reduce them and keep them out of the living space. Because scorpions come from the surrounding environment and follow their insect prey, the most durable results come from combining perimeter treatment, insect control, harborage reduction, and sealing - which is exactly how we approach it.
