THE HARDEST ROACH TO KILL

German Cockroach Control in Fresno, CA

The small light-brown roach in your Fresno kitchen is almost always a German cockroach - the fastest-breeding, hardest-to-kill roach there is. Store-bought sprays and foggers scatter them and miss the egg cases. Here is what actually clears an infestation.

By Paul Outfleet, Owner - CA SPCB #8539 - Updated 2026

If the roaches in your home are small (about half an inch), light tan, with two dark stripes running down the back of the head, you are dealing with German cockroaches - and they are a different problem from the big roaches that wander in from outside. German cockroaches live indoors full-time, breed faster than any other house roach, and shrug off the sprays and foggers most people reach for first. By the time you see a few in daylight, there are usually many more hidden nearby.

The fast answer

German cockroaches cannot be sprayed away. One female and her offspring can become several hundred roaches in a few months, and the egg cases (oothecae) survive most over-the-counter products. Control means professional gel baits and an insect growth regulator placed into the harborage, plus a couple of follow-ups timed to the hatch cycle. That is the approach that actually empties out a kitchen.

German roaches vs. the big roaches you see outside

This distinction matters because it changes the whole treatment. The large reddish-brown roaches that turn up in garages, drains, and on patios are usually American or Oriental cockroaches - often occasional invaders from outside. German cockroaches are the small indoor breeders that set up permanent residence near your food and water. If you want to confirm which you have, our guide to the cockroaches of California has photos; the table below covers the quick version.

Why they explode so fast in a Fresno kitchen

German cockroaches want warmth, moisture, and food within a short crawl - which is why they cluster behind the fridge and dishwasher, inside the motor housing of small appliances, under the sink, and in the cracks behind cabinets and baseboards. A female carries her egg case until it is nearly ready to hatch, protecting up to around 40 young at a time, and the cycle from egg to breeding adult can run in well under two months in a warm Valley home. Spray the counter and you kill a handful while dozens stay tucked in the harborage.

Why DIY almost always fails on German roaches

Foggers and bombs make a German roach problem worse

Total-release foggers push roaches deeper into wall voids and appliance cavities instead of killing the colony, and broadcast sprays can make them bait-shy and scatter them into new rooms. Many German cockroach populations are also resistant to common retail insecticides. The result is the same story we hear constantly: it looked better for a week, then they came right back.

How our German cockroach program works

Our German roach process

StepWhat we do
1. Inspect & find harboragePinpoint where they cluster - behind and inside appliances, under sinks, in cabinet cracks
2. Gel baitPlace professional gel baits directly into the harborage; roaches feed, return, and spread it through the population
3. Growth regulator (IGR)Add an IGR that stops nymphs from maturing and breeding, collapsing the next generation
4. Sanitation planShow you the moisture and food sources to cut off so the bait does all the work
5. Follow-upReturn on a schedule timed to the hatch so newly emerged roaches hit fresh bait

Health reasons not to wait

German cockroaches are not just unpleasant. Their droppings and shed skins are a well-documented trigger for asthma and allergies, especially in kids, and they track bacteria across food-prep surfaces as they move from drains and trash to your counters. In an apartment, a population in one unit readily spreads to neighbors through shared walls and plumbing - so the sooner it is handled, the smaller the job.

German cockroach control FAQ

Why do I have German cockroaches in a clean house?

German cockroaches are usually carried in - in grocery bags, secondhand appliances, cardboard, or moving boxes, or they spread from a neighboring apartment through shared walls and pipes. A spotless kitchen slows them down but does not keep them out, because they only need tiny amounts of food and water. Cleanliness helps treatment work; it is not a cause or a cure on its own.

Can I get rid of German roaches myself?

It is very hard. Retail sprays and foggers tend to scatter them and miss the egg cases, and many populations resist common over-the-counter insecticides. Professional gel baits plus a growth regulator, placed into the harborage and followed up on a hatch schedule, are what reliably clears an established German cockroach infestation.

How long does it take to get rid of them?

Most homes see a big drop within the first couple of weeks, with full control over a few weeks as follow-up visits catch newly hatched roaches. Because the egg cases are protected until they hatch, a single visit rarely finishes the job - the timed follow-ups are what prevent a rebound.

Are German cockroaches dangerous?

They do not bite, but their droppings and shed skins are a recognized asthma and allergy trigger, particularly for children, and they can spread bacteria across kitchen surfaces. That is the main reason not to let an infestation ride.

I live in an apartment - will they just come back from next door?

They can, which is why apartment roach problems are best addressed at the building level when possible. We treat your unit thoroughly and seal the gaps around shared plumbing and walls that let them travel; if you are a renter, let your property manager know so neighboring units can be checked too.
