Black Widow Control in Fresno

The black widow is the one Central Valley spider worth taking seriously — and the one we are called for most. We find them where they hide, treat the harborage, and clear the webs and egg sacs so your garage, yard, and play areas are safe again.

Licensed CA SPCB #8539 · Family-owned in Fresno since 2020 · By Paul Outfleet

Most spiders around a Fresno home are harmless — but the western black widow is the exception, and it is the spider we get the most calls about. Black widows hide in the low, dark, undisturbed spots all over a Central Valley property: garage corners, stored boxes, water-meter and irrigation boxes, woodpiles, block walls, and the undersides of patio furniture and play structures. Because they hide in numbers and their egg sacs can each release hundreds of spiderlings, knocking down the one you see rarely solves it. We treat the harborage, not just the spider.

The short version

Black widows are the one spider in Fresno worth a professional, especially around children and pets. We inspect the spots they actually hide, treat the harborage, knock down webs and egg sacs, and set up an exterior barrier so they do not come back. Call (559) 472-8200 or request a no-cost inspection below.

The western black widow — shiny black with a red hourglass underneath. The one Central Valley spider worth treating.

Is it actually a black widow?

The adult female is glossy jet-black with a round abdomen and a bright red hourglass on the underside, hanging upside down in a strong, messy web low to the ground. Males and juveniles are smaller, brown, and striped, and are essentially harmless. If you are not sure what you have, our black widow ID guide walks through it — or send us a photo and we will tell you. Either way, if you are seeing widows where your family spends time, it is worth handling.

Why black widows are worth a professional

A black widow bite is painful and occasionally needs medical care — the real concern is for children, older adults, and pets (more on the black widow bite here). The problem with do-it-yourself is that widows are secretive and they hide in numbers: by the time you see one, there are usually more tucked into spots you cannot easily reach, often with egg sacs. Spraying a visible spider does nothing about the harborage or the next generation. Reaching bare-handed into those hiding spots is also exactly how bites happen.

Our black widow control process

Inspect. We check the spots widows actually use — garage, meter boxes, woodpiles, eaves, patio furniture, play areas — and confirm what you have.

Treat the harborage. We treat the hiding places and cracks where widows shelter, not just the surface, so we reach the spiders you do not see.

Knock down webs and egg sacs. We physically remove webs and egg sacs so existing sacs do not hatch a new generation.

Set an exterior barrier. We treat the perimeter and entry points to keep widows and other spiders from re-establishing.

Follow up. Spider problems are about persistence — we schedule follow-up so the property stays clear, especially through the warm months when widows are most active.

Why Fresno homeowners call Total Pest Control

We are a family-owned Fresno company, licensed by the California Structural Pest Control Board (CA SPCB #8539), and spiders — black widows in particular — are one of the things we handle most across the Central Valley. We know where they hide in local homes because we pull them out of Fresno garages, meter boxes, and woodpiles all season. You get an honest inspection, treatment focused on the harborage, and a plan to keep them gone — not a one-time spray. We also handle the harmless spiders and webbing while we are there. Looking for general spider control instead? See our spider control page.

Areas we serve

We provide black widow and spider control across Fresno, Clovis, Madera, Sanger, Reedley, Kingsburg, Selma, and the surrounding Central Valley. If you are nearby and not sure, just ask — we will let you know.

Black widow control FAQ

Are black widows dangerous to children and pets?

They are the one Central Valley spider worth real caution. A bite is painful and occasionally needs medical care, and the risk is highest for young children, older adults, and pets. That is exactly why we treat where they hide rather than waiting for someone to reach into a web.

How do you get rid of black widows?

We inspect the spots widows actually hide, treat the harborage and cracks where they shelter, physically remove webs and egg sacs, and set an exterior barrier at the perimeter and entry points. Follow-up keeps the property clear through the active season.

Where do black widows hide around a home?

Low, dark, undisturbed places — garage corners, stored boxes, water-meter and irrigation boxes, woodpiles, block walls, and under patio furniture and play structures. They are an outdoor spider that uses the sheltered edges of your home.

How much does black widow control cost?

It depends on the property size and how widespread the activity is, so we quote it after a no-cost inspection rather than guessing over the web. Call (559) 472-8200 and we will set up a visit.

How soon can you come out?

Usually quickly — black widow calls are a priority for us, especially when children or pets are involved. Call (559) 472-8200 or request an inspection and we will schedule the first available visit.
